Telerehabilitation FAQ’s

What is Telerehabilitation?

Telerehabilitation is physiotherapy performed over Zoom. That’s right! Over a Zoom call we will conduct an interview to find out more about your injury and your history. I will do a postural assessment, movement analysis, check your mobility, and find out what hurts the most. You will be given an individualized treatment program that you can conduct from your home.

What does a telerehabilitation treatment program look like?

Your treatment program will include education, lifestyle modification, muscle release techniques, mobility treatment, and a home exercise program. I address all aspects of your injury the same way we do in clinic.

What are the benefits?

No commute time.

More self-reliance for injury recovery.

Can assess your movement patterns within your natural environment eg. Stair assessments, Ergonomic desk assessment, dance studio, etc.

What are the risks or drawbacks to telerehabilitation?

Privacy

  • To mitigate this risk I use a video conferencing through JaneApp that is both HIPAA compliant and PIPEDA compliant.

Risk of Injury Or Adverse Event

  • The environment is not controlled by the physiotherapist, therefore factors, such as using socks on hardwood, could lead to injury. You are asked to take time prior to the appointment to clear adequate space and use a yoga or carpet for all exercises.

  • Physiotherapist is not present to respond in case of an emergency. It is always recommended to have another person nearby when performing telerehabilitation and ensure an up to date emergency contact is on file.

Does Not Replace In-person Appointments

  • Decreased certainty with diagnosis without an in-person exam.

  • No hands on treatment options including Active Release Techniques and acupuncture.

Is Telerehabilitation a “waste” of my Extended Health Insurance?

Often when we think of physiotherapy we think of the treatment that the physiotherapist performs TO us. However, the bigger component is the changes that YOU make to reduce factors that worsen the condition and increase habits that help to improve it. This is where telerehabilitation excels! I can provide you the education you need to manage your own injury right away. This helps to prevent the injury from worsening. Telerehabilitation does not replace in-person physiotherapy treatment but is a valuable addition to the process.

“Telerehabilitation has been my saving grace during this pandemic!”
